Get to Know Humoral Medicine
Humoral Medicine is an authentic medical system whose origins trace back to what Allah Almighty taught the prophets, peace be upon them. It is attributed to our master Adam and other prophets who laid its earliest foundations. This science is based on the principle of balance among four primary humors in the body: blood, which is hot and moist; phlegm, which is cold and moist; yellow bile, which is hot and dry; and black bile, which is cold and dry. Many scholars and commentators have pointed out that human health is linked to the equilibrium of these humors, as mentioned in the works of Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Zabidi, al-Razi, and others.
Humoral Medicine is known for explaining the causes of diseases based on imbalances in the proportions of these humors, and it treats them through the opposing method in order to restore natural balance. This science has extended from the beginning of humanity to the present day, with successive generations continuing to develop its knowledge and apply it in practice alongside experience and empirical observation.
Today, Humoral Medicine represents a comprehensive approach that combines ancient wisdom with a deep understanding of human nature. Practicing it requires sufficient knowledge of the characteristics of the humors, remedies, and methods of use, in adherence to the trust of knowledge and in safeguarding people’s health and well-being.
