The Four Digestions
Learn about the Four Stages of Digestion in Humoral Medicine with Dr. Hani El Batal: Discover how food is transformed in the stomach, liver, blood vessels, and organs into nourishment that suits the body and helps maintain health.
Digestion is the process by which the innate hotness transforms food into a substance prepared to receive the form of the body's organs.
There are four stages of digestion:
-
Digestion in the stomach
-
Digestion in the liver
-
Digestion in the blood vessels
-
Digestion in the organs

When we eat food, it is transformed in the stomach into chyle. It then travels to the liver, where it is transformed into chyme, that is, a humor. This is considered digestion.
Some scholars say there are five stages of digestion, but here we say there are four.
The first stage of digestion takes place in the stomach, where the food is transformed. It is then transformed a second time in the liver, and again in the blood vessels.
As the humor circulates through the blood vessels and reaches the organs, it is transformed into the same kind as the nourished tissue—the very organ itself. In the final stage, it becomes the organ itself.
Therefore, it is important to know what we eat and drink so that it does not transform into something we do not want and that is not suitable for us.
